Empowering Communities with Carbon Literacy

Our recently developed Community Leaders course builds on the success of Carbon Literacy for Local Authorities, extending training from internal staff outwards into the communities they serve. If you’re looking for a way to engage the general public and cascade Carbon Literacy out widely for the greatest impact – this could be the perfect solution.

Local authorities can facilitate community leaders – who are so often the lynchpin of dynamic change – to participate in a day’s worth of learning and action planning. This Toolkit course will equip them with the knowledge, tools, inspiration, and connections to foster long-lasting, self-sustaining change within their own spheres of influence throughout the community.

Although the Toolkit course is designed specifically for Community Leaders, the materials can be adapted to suit communities and community groups, helping to build the ripple effect Carbon Literacy courses are renowned for across your local area.

How was the course developed?

To ensure a rigorous standard of learning and application, a panel of councils have co-created, reviewed and piloted the materials, ensuring the latest and best materials are used. We would like to extend our gratitude to Plymouth City Council, Northumberland County Council, and Carbon Literacy Trainer Anne-Marie Soulsby for piloting the course and providing us with invaluable feedback.

The initial development of this Toolkit course was funded by the UK Government Department for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy.

What will you receive?

The Toolkit course consists of slides, activity resources, a comprehensive trainer manual and a ‘getting started’ pack.

As well as covering climate science and policy, the course also includes:

  • Case studies & examples – these provide examples of best practice that communities can adopt and adapt.
  • An in-depth look at vulnerability & climate justice – helping learners understand what issues are relevant to their community.
  • Customisable slides – as with all our Toolkit Courses, there are opportunities within the materials to contextualise the learning to your location.
