15,000 Certified Learners!

September 2020 by Helen Filby

We are thrilled to announce another milestone in our history books… 15,000 citizens have now officially been certified as Carbon Literate. As a result, over 30,000 actions have been pledged by individuals, organisations and communities, directly reducing our carbon emissions. Reaching this milestone is even more exciting considering we only just reached 10,000 citizens certified a little over a year ago.

We’d like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who has been a part of this journey so far. We owe the success of The Project to a huge range of people, our founders and teamtrustees, dedicated volunteerstrainers; and not forgetting all the fantastic organisations who have worked with us disseminating Carbon Literacy training, many of who are CLO’s and CLTO’s.

Starting from scratch, over the last 8 years, Carbon Literacy has spread throughout the UK and internationally. Below charts the growth of certificates issued, tracking how many individuals became Carbon Literate each year (and where we’re hoping to be by the end of 2020):

Training has slowed a little in recent months, obviously as a direct result of the current pandemic. Whilst our partner organisations have been busy adapting their courses for distance delivery, enabling them to continue delivering Carbon Literacy and catalysing action on climate change in our socially-distanced world – over 25 courses have now been accredited for distance delivery.

Having distance delivered Carbon Literacy courses is important to maintain momentum in organisations that have been working on Carbon Literacy for a while, as well as to support new organisations who are keen to get to work but, without the face-to-face courses, would otherwise not have access to experiencing the training themselves, or the ability to get their own training underway. The Carbon Literacy Project is supporting organisations in a number of ways as they adapt their courses to this new format, find out more here.

We greatly look forward to reaching our next certification milestone and hope that you continue on the journey with us, helping to further disseminate Carbon Literacy to your audience and sectors. Can you help us reach our target for 2020? 17 or even 18,000?
