Can you help bring Carbon Literacy to our schools?

July 2025 by Rebecca Stacey

We know that almost 67% of school leavers think they will be personally affected by climate change. We know that the school sector accounts for almost a third of public sector emissions. And we know that the Department for Education is asking our schools to take on more responsibilities to make sure we meet our emission reduction obligations for 2050. How can we support our schools in their carbon reduction obligations and their sustainability journey?

How were already supporting school staff

In the last six months, we’ve worked hard to get our Carbon Literacy Toolkit ready for School Staff. And it’s working! We now have a Carbon Literacy course that enables staff, volunteers and governors across all educational institutions to develop their understanding of climate science, to read carbon footprints and reduce the emissions and climate impacts of their schools. The course has been designed to make schools climate-ready and is supporting them in their unique position as educators, influencers and community leaders. If you want to find out more about this course, visit our Schools webpage or watch the launch webinar.

Hundreds of teachers have been prompted to become trained and certified as Carbon Literate within the first month of launching the Carbon Literacy Toolkit for Schools Staff. And we’re just getting started; we’re planning for schools to be a big part of our Carbon Literacy Action Day in November, and we’re looking forward to the impact that Carbon Literate Schools can have on the communities they work in and the reduction they can have on emissions. But we can’t stop with school staff. In order to take a truly whole school approach to climate education and climate action, we need to educate and empower school students!

How you can help us empower students

We’re seeking to develop a pupil-facing course for young people aged 14–18: a powerful, engaging set of materials to help students understand the climate crisis, take meaningful action, and shape a fairer future. But to make this course accessible to all, especially those in under-resourced schools or communities, we need your support.

Whether you’re able to sponsor course development, extend access, or partner with us to help us scale Carbon Literacy for school students across the UK, your support will give young people the tools, confidence, and knowledge to lead. Help us build the next generation of Carbon Literate changemakers.

If you or your organisation is in a position to support, please get in touch at [email protected].
