Empowering Climate Champions & Building Employee Pride

December 2025 by Lucia Simmons

Carbon Literacy is more than training – it’s a spark that ignites agency, transforms workplace culture, and nurtures a sense of pride in the people who step up to make a difference. Across sectors, organisations are elevating their sustainability leadership by not only embedding Carbon Literacy into their operations, but by celebrating the individuals who bring it to life every day.

Two recent (and completely unrelated) award winners – Daniel Milisic at Bryt Energy and Lucy Westover at Bristol Medical School – show how empowering employees through Carbon Literacy can create enthusiastic champions, strengthen team culture, and drive ongoing climate action. Their stories highlight the real-world impact that recognition, support, and shared purpose can have in building climate-confident teams.

Spotlight on Dan Milisic – Bryt Energy’s 2025 Carbon Literacy Award Winner!

In 2024, Bryt Energy became the first renewable electricity supplier to be accredited as a Silver Carbon Literate Organisation, having now trained over 130 employees across 18 teams and certified 70% of its workforce as Carbon Literate.

Since then, they have been working to understand and track their team’s actions from the training carried out so far, encouraging people to share their progress on what they committed to.

To honour the efforts people have made to achieve their actions, Bryt Energy established the Carbon Literacy Engagement Award as part of their employee Recognition programme celebrated in December.

While some learners have already achieved either their individual or group action, one learner stood out as the first to achieve both. Not only that, but he has been engaged throughout, making sure every member of his team was enrolled on the training and engaging with all the wider sustainability awareness campaigns Bryt Energy carries out internally.

As a result, Sales Support Team Manager, Daniel Milisic, won the inaugural 2025 Carbon Literacy Engagement Award! Speaking about the win, Dan said:

“This recognition means a lot to me. Over the past year, I’ve made a conscious effort to reduce my own carbon footprint and encourage colleagues, friends, and family to play their part too. What began as simply cycling to the train station has now grown into completing my full 14-mile round trip each day on my bike. It’s boosted my fitness, improved my mental health, and saved me a fair bit of money along the way!

As part of my commitment, I’ve also pledged to host quarterly sustainability-focused meetings across my team, sharing everything from breakthroughs in green technology and new environmental legislation to rewilding efforts and inspiring stories from around the world. It’s been a great way to keep the conversation going and build a community of people who care about making a difference.

One of the things I love most about working at Bryt Energy is how deeply sustainability is embedded in our culture, from the products we sell to the furniture in our office and even the goods we use in our cafeteria. It’s inspiring to be part of a company that genuinely lives its values.”

Speaking about the award, Sustainability Specialist, Georgina Kilburn, said:

We hope that the Carbon Literacy Engagement award at Bryt Energy is something that continues, to really encourage and recognise those that not only complete the training, but continue engaging with sustainability throughout the year.”

A huge congratulations to Daniel for the well-deserved recognition, and a big well done to the sustainability team at Bryt Energy for empowering people to engage in climate action year-round.

Spotlight on Lucy Westover – Bristol Medical School’s HALSEN Unsung Hero Award winner!

Last year, Bristol Medical School became the first medical school to be accredited as a Carbon Literate Educator, gaining Bronze status. To achieve this, 65 staff and students completed training, committing to actions including reviewing cold storage, consolidating purchase orders to cut deliveries, reducing business travel, and offering plant-based catering for meetings.

A year on, they are well on their way to achieving Silver – with over 450 staff and students trained. Carbon Literacy training is now officially part of the Year 1 undergraduate medical curriculum; the first cohort was trained in February, and the next cohort will be trained in 2026.

The driving force behind this was Specialist Sustainability Officer, Lucy Westover, who has now been recognised by The University of Bristol’s Health and Life Sciences Education Network (HALSEN) with the Unsung Hero Award for her work embedding sustainability in the curriculum.

For Lucy, “a highlight of this year has been rolling out Carbon Literacy training across the School.” She has also been helping other Schools in the University to roll out Carbon Literacy training to their staff and students, so more individuals across the university are now getting certified.

The Medical School has a sustainability blog where learners often share their Carbon Literacy pledges – including their challenges, how they overcame them, and tips for others – inspiring further action across the Medical School and beyond.

A huge congratulations and well done to Lucy for all your hard work and well-earned recognition for championing Carbon Literacy and delivering action.

The Power of Recognition in Sustaining Climate Action

These stories show how Carbon Literacy can energise teams, grow pride, and create meaningful, long-lasting change. By recognising and rewarding the people who champion climate action, organisations can amplify impact far beyond the training – inspiring others, strengthening culture, and building momentum throughout the year.

A huge congratulations to Daniel and Lucy for their well-deserved achievements, and to the teams supporting them. Their leadership demonstrates exactly what Carbon Literacy makes possible when people feel empowered, valued, and proud to take action.
