Becoming an Accredited Carbon Literacy Trainer

May 2025 by The Carbon Literacy Trainer Team

Anyone who is Carbon Literate themselves can progress to delivering Carbon Literacy ® training to colleagues, clients and communities. It’s one of the elements that makes Carbon Literacy a globally unique initiative that is scalable, accessible and relevant to all, meeting people where they are to deliver their best climate action. With over 870 unique courses accredited, our Carbon Literacy Trainer (CLT) accreditation scheme enables trainers to be recognised for their expertise in Carbon Literacy course delivery.

We offer 3 levels of trainer accreditation, showcasing increasing levels of training experience. Level 1 Carbon Literacy Facilitator (CLF) accreditation is encouraged for all trainers as it’s free and easy to acquire with a few simple steps, and there are now 760 CLFs registered with us. Only 7 trainers so far have achieved the highest (level 3) Carbon Literacy Consultant (CLC) accreditation, which showcases trainers delivering across a wide range of sectors and is awarded on an invitation-only basis. The intermediate (level 2) Carbon Literacy Trainer (CLT) accreditation is both a step up and a stepping stone for high-calibre trainers to be recognised and rewarded for their Carbon Literacy training accomplishments, unlocking unique benefits.

Hear from some of our CLTs below to learn why they began delivering Carbon Literacy to their unique peers, and why they took the step to become accredited as a CLT.

Richard Smith, PS: Planet

Delivering Carbon Literacy has been one of the most impactful things I’ve done in my sustainability career. Seeing people go from “arms folded” at the start of a session to becoming deeply emotionally and intellectually involved is a wonderful experience. Carbon Literacy was a revelation to the broadcasting industry where I started my CL journey; it brought climate change to life for an audience that typically hadn’t engaged with it much before, leading to learners implementing practical changes at home and on set. I’m looking forward to doing the same for the other sectors I’ve worked in, including heritage and higher education.

Being a certified Trainer gives clients the reassurance they need that I know what I’m doing. People have told me that my Carbon Literacy sessions have changed their lives. I think it’s also fair to say Carbon Literacy has changed my life, too.

Emma Burlow, Lighthouse Sustainability

Whilst undertaking Carbon Literacy training myself, I realised that the highest impact pledge I could make was to become a Trainer. Working in businesses, I knew that having a couple of Carbon Literate people (willing volunteers) wasn’t going to be enough. I feel strongly that we need armies of people with solid foundational knowledge of climate to influence business decisions. We cannot rely on sustainability teams alone or on interested individuals. I decided to work on getting a critical mass of learners within my clients.

Becoming a Trainer has given me access to a wide number of businesses, commercial, marketing, sales and operational teams. I hear their questions, challenges and barriers, which makes me a more informed sustainability professional. As a business, we’ve also been able to deliver to global teams, which deepens our knowledge and impact. We developed a Train the Trainer course, which I’m very proud of. CL training has become the highest-impact work we do as a business.

Sasha Beswick

As a long-standing advocate for Carbon Literacy, I’ve been delivering impactful training at scale, using my own unique approach. Over the years, I’ve noticed shifts in attitudes towards climate action and an improvement in the quality of pledges made by participants.

The climate education landscape is still saturated with overwhelming catastrophic content that leaves people with feelings of despair, worry and self-doubt. As a CLT, I am trusted to provide individuals with the facts, tools and resources to make informed, positive changes without compromising the things that bring them joy. Becoming a Carbon Literacy Trainer allowed me to formalise my expertise and distinctive training style, and I encourage anyone delivering climate education to explore the CLT accreditation and Carbon Literacy model.

Dom Winter, Protect Our Winters UK

I have been delivering Carbon Literacy training since 2021, which has been fantastic. I realised accreditation as a Carbon Literacy Trainer would help recipients of the training have confidence in the training delivery.

I offer training to outdoor businesses, athletes, instructors and other passionate outdoor enthusiasts, and it’s great to be able to give the assurance of being a qualified Trainer to them all as encouragement to book on, especially if they don’t know the organisation I work for (POW UK) itself well.

Adrienne Fusek, In Good Company (IGC)

People protect what they love, but they can’t love what they don’t know! As an environmental science and sustainability educator, I believe that every inhabitant of our incredible planet must develop a deep love for it in order to protect it.

Being a Carbon Literacy Trainer supports my commitment to bringing international best practices in climate education to local communities in San Diego. Our mission at IGC is to transform climate curiosity into a catalyst for environmental justice. Delivering Carbon Literacy directly supports this mission by helping us build a critical mass of informed activists. I see this work as combatting apathy by awakening our collective power. IGC’s work contributes to the local efforts of many inspiring organizations and individual activists. Together we must fight for a habitable planet, and education is how we engage in that fight.

Nick Garrod, Rio AI (UK) Limited

I pursued CLT accreditation to deliver certified Carbon Literacy training that meets the needs of both public and private sector audiences. The accreditation ensures our training is trusted, consistent, and impactful, helping organisations across sectors build awareness and take practical climate action. It has enabled us to tailor content to the specific priorities and pressures faced by different sectors—whether it’s policy and compliance in the public sector or innovation and reputation in the private sector. This flexibility enhances engagement and supports meaningful, lasting change.
