Help Us Keep Our Schools Toolkit Free!

November 2025 by Toby Bennett

The climate emergency isn’t a challenge we can postpone for future generations. It’s one we must prepare them to meet. Schools stand at the heart of that mission – they play a vital role in helping young people understand the science of climate change and feel capable and confident to act.

At The Carbon Literacy Project, we believe that knowledge and action inspire agency and hope. Through our Carbon Literacy® Schools Toolkit, teachers, governors, and school leaders are gaining the understanding and confidence to weave climate action into every corner of school life.

Empowering Our Future Leaders

The next generation will inherit the most complex environmental and social challenges in history. But many teachers have received little formal training on climate change. We want to bridge this gap. Our Schools Toolkit gives educators a clear, practical route to embed climate action and sustainability into their everyday work, building resilience, strengthening confidence, and empowering students to lead by example.

When a teacher, a staff member, or a governor becomes Carbon Literate, they’re better equipped to inspire change, cultivate hope, and build a sense of agency around climate action. They help students see that their choices matter, that collective action is powerful, and that they are not powerless in the face of the climate crisis.

Funding Carbon Literacy for Schools

Since launching this Summer, the Schools Toolkit has already reached 80 teachers and staff from 60 schools. It’s helped build communities of practice where staff share ideas, students design projects, and whole schools begin to shift towards low-carbon thinking.

But maintaining and expanding this resource comes at a cost. That’s why we’re taking part in the Big Give Christmas Challenge – the UK’s largest match-funding campaign – to raise £10,000 to keep this toolkit free for schools.

For one week only, from midday on Tuesday 2nd December to midday on Tuesday 9th December, every donation will be matched by our match funders, our founding sponsor Westford Mill, part of Beechfield Brands, and PlanAid, our Big Give Champion. Both will generously match £2,500 of donations, unlocking £5,000 of match funding for us!

This means that every pound you donate will be automatically doubled – helping more schools prepare the climate leaders of tomorrow.

All funds raised toward our £10,000 target will be used directly to:

  • Support 400 more teachers, school leaders and staff to become Carbon Literate.
  • Enable 13 schools to take action on climate change without financial barriers.
  • Lay the foundations for a long-term, whole-school approach to sustainability.
  • Create ripple effects of action, supporting pupils, families and communities

Your support will help us keep the Schools Toolkit free for as many schools as possible, ensuring that every school – not just those with extra resources – can access high-quality, evidence-based climate education.

Inspiring Hope in the Next Generation

In a time when climate anxiety is rising, Carbon Literacy provides something profoundly important – hope grounded in understanding and action. By supporting this campaign, you’re helping school staff inspire that hope by turning concern into confidence and awareness into meaningful action.

Together, we can help every young person grow up Carbon Literate and ready to shape a fairer, cleaner, more sustainable world.

Help us keep the Schools Toolkit free – and help us build a Carbon Literate next generation.
