How to Roll Out Carbon Literacy in Your Organisation

September 2025 by Anne-Marie Soulsby

Rolling out Carbon Literacy training can feel like a big step, but with the right pathway it becomes a structured, achievable, and hugely rewarding process. Here’s a step-by-step guide to help you navigate the journey from becoming Carbon Literate yourself to delivering accredited training to others.

1. Start with Your Own Learning

Before you can train others, it’s important to become certified Carbon Literate yourself. The best way to do this is by attending an open Carbon Literacy course. Once you’ve completed the training and received your certification, you’ll have a solid grounding in climate science, climate justice, and practical action.

If you’re keen to go further, you need to attend a Delivering Successful Carbon Literacy (DSCL) workshop will give you the skills and confidence needed to train others.

You can find all the open training courses and our upcoming DSCL sessions on our events page.

2. Decide How You Want to Deliver

Once certified and you have attended the DSCL workshop, the next step is deciding how to deliver the training within your organisation or community. You might choose to lead the sessions yourself, or bring in an external training provider to deliver them on your behalf. There are several routes:

  • Write your own course – You can build training materials from scratch, use the free Course Kit Base Pack as a foundation, or adapt an existing Toolkit* and re-accredit it.
  • Use a Toolkit* – Toolkits are ready made, sector specific courses that you can deliver as they are, or adapt to your context. You can find out more about our Toolkits on our Sector page.
  • Commission delivery – If you’d prefer not to create or deliver training yourself, you can work with experienced trainers to deliver Carbon Literacy on your behalf. We have a directory of certified Carbon Literacy Trainers that can provide you with a quote for this.

3. Ensure Alignment with the Standard

If you decide you design your own course, it’s essential that your course materials align with The Carbon Literacy Standard. To evidence this, you’ll need to complete a Criteria Checker Form, which helps the accreditation team understand how your course meets the required outcomes.

Please note: When using a Toolkit course without additional adaptation, this step isn’t required as the course is already accredited against the Standard and can be used for training straight away.

4. Submit for Accreditation

Once your materials are ready, submit them to The Carbon Literacy Project for accreditation. There is a fee and an invoicing process to complete. The team usually takes around 3–4 weeks for the initial review.

Be prepared: some editing or adjustments may be required to ensure your course meets the Standard. But don’t worry as the team provides feedback and support to help you refine your materials until they’re ready.

5. Start Delivering

With your course accredited, you’re ready to start delivering training. At this stage, it’s important to:

  • Keep clear records of your training delivery
  • Track participants and their certification status
  • Consider following the Trainer Development Pathway to further build your skills and credibility

6. Evolve and Expand

Once you’re comfortable delivering your course, you may wish to expand your training offer. This could mean:

  • Developing additional course materials
  • Supporting specific audiences such as community groups, schools, or workplaces
  • Collaborating with partners to increase reach and impact

Carbon Literacy is an evolving journey. The more you embed it into your organisation or community, the more powerful the impact becomes.
