150,000 Certified Carbon Literate Citizens

January 2026 by Lucia Simmons

We’re thrilled to announce that, on the cusp of the new year, the Carbon Literacy community reached a new milestone! There are now officially 150,000 people certified as Carbon Literate – spanning seven continents, 47 nations and over 13,000 organisations – united by their commitment to deliver their best climate action wherever they are.

Together they have pledged at least 300,000 actions and saved approximately 540,450t CO2e – a figure akin to the annual carbon footprint of a small to mid-sized UK city. That is hugely significant – and it’s more than just an abstract stat. Behind it stand 150,000 Carbon Literate individuals who know that burning fossil fuels harms their future and are discovering what to do about it. That’s 150,000 people making more conscious decisions in their professional and personal lives, influencing their organisations and their communities, and changing society for the better. This represents a cultural shift that is pushing forward despite uncertainty.

With the headlines over the past year, you’d be forgiven for thinking that people and organisations around the world are giving up on climate action. Fortunately, that’s not the case. In Britain, 74% of people are concerned about climate change, and 60% support net zero. While they’re fed up with and distrust political rhetoric around it, this doesn’t mean they don’t care or don’t support action to address climate change. They just need clear guidance on what can and needs to be done in practice. That’s where Carbon Literacy comes in.

Carbon Literacy enables learners to understand not only the tangible impacts of climate change on their lives, but also the solutions that are the most actionable and impactful for them. It gives them the agency and confidence to take action – not for the sake of political or reputational gain, but for the real-life benefits that climate action brings. More efficient energy use means lower bills. Driving less means less congestion and better air quality in our neighbourhoods. Consuming less means spending less, and shopping locally and seasonally means investing in our communities.

Once Carbon Literate individuals realise this, they spread the word. And that’s why Carbon Literacy has only continued to grow, despite headwinds, with a 50% increase in the total number of learners certified in the last 18 months alone. This continued acceleration represents an unfaltering commitment across sectors; businesses, local authorities, educators, and communities remain steadfast in recognising Carbon Literacy as a core skill and value for the present and future workforce, and every member of society.

150,000 certified learners is a landmark achievement, one owed to you – the Carbon Literacy community; our past and present team of volunteers and staff, our recognised Partners, the hundreds of trainers, and the thousands of organisations and learners who have undertaken and achieved Carbon Literacy. But we cannot rest on our laurels. We know there is much more work to be done as the forces that are trying to delay necessary action get more and more voluble.

To help us continue accelerating Carbon Literacy towards our goal of one million certified Carbon Literate citizens by 2030, we invite you to join us in using this milestone to share your own Carbon Literacy story. Tell your friends, family, and colleagues your Carbon Literacy pledges and how they’re going. Tell your customers, clients and suppliers how you contributed to this landmark figure.

If you’re not yet Carbon Literate, come on and join the movement. Contact us to find out how you can get even more involved or browse upcoming open courses tailored to a whole host of different audiences.
