Support the National Emergency Briefing

October 2025 by Phil Korbel

If you’re reading this, you’re probably Carbon Literate. This is a quick and impactful new action you can take to tackle the climate and nature crisis. Your journey started with gaining knowledge, and this event will jump-start that journey for our MPs.

What is the National Emergency Briefing?

Taking action on the climate and nature crisis is slipping down the political agenda, even as scientists warn that the impacts are proving more severe than first thought. In response, eight of the UK’s leading experts will brief an invite-only audience of politicians and leaders from business, culture, and faith at the National Emergency Briefing on 27th November at Westminster Central Hall.

How you can support

It is vital that as many MPs as possible are present to hear this authoritative account. We are working with the organisers to help make the event a success, and we invite you to support this effort. Please visit www.nebriefing.org and use the postcode checker to check whether your MP is attending. If they are not, you will be able to email them through the site to request their attendance. You can also check out the extraordinary speakers.

Carbon Literacy on the agenda

One of the actions being proposed at the event is that parliamentarians undertake Carbon Literacy training. We already have a training toolkit for elected members of local authorities, and there is training underway or imminent in Holyrood, Stormont and the Tynwald on the Isle of Man. This will mean that creating a ‘Carbon Literate Westminster’ training resource won’t be a big task.

A message of voter support

Even if your MP does not attend, the more invitations they receive from their constituents, the stronger the message of voter support for climate and nature action. The event will be followed by a series of community film showings highlighting the best of the presentations.

We know that too much bad news is a major turn-off for most of the population. It’s also fair to say that our elected representatives don’t have that ‘get-out’ clause – they’re in the job to ensure the well-being of the nation, and ignoring the climate and nature crisis is a dereliction of that duty. The experts at the briefing (all presenting in a short TED-talk format), venue, and timing (before commencement of business in Parliament) all mean that there should be no excuse for not attending.

Good luck with getting your MP on board.
