The Carbon Literacy Project was founded and developed by Cooler Projects CIC. The Cooler Projects team now deliver The Carbon Literacy Project on behalf of The Carbon Literacy Trust.
Co-founder and Managing Director. Having graduated in biochemistry, Dave began his career with what is now Deloitte, and then spent twelve years working in IT, becoming a director of one of the North West’s top IT companies. He then founded a small management consultancy and spent ten years working as a management trainer and coach in the commercial sector. However increasingly concerned by the obvious and growing challenge of climate change, he became active with his local Friends of the Earth group, evolved his business into sustainability work, and in parallel spent seven years as a trustee and director on the board of Friends of the Earth in the UK.
He is an experienced public speaker and advocate and has appeared widely on BBC TV and Radio, ITV, C4 and Sky and in the regional and national press. When not developing and leading The Carbon Literacy Project, he is involved in other general advocacy, advisory and chairing work, cycles and swims, reads and studies art and architecture, and “bothers butterflies” with a camera.
Cooler co-founder. Phil is a long-standing social entrepreneur, broadcaster and community activist based in Manchester. He wants to leave his children ‘a future, not an apology’.
Phil has been a long-time activist for sustainable development, moving from local work with Friends of the Earth in the 1980s to riding a tandem back from Sydney raising awareness of rainforest conservation in 1990. Having studied law at Manchester Polytechnic, Phil enjoyed a successful career in radio working as a presenter and producer of features and documentaries for BBC Network Radio and working for programmes as diverse as You and Yours and Mark Radcliffe. One of his proudest moments remains giving the first-ever radio airplay to The Inspiral Carpets. Between making programmes Phil delivered media training to a wide range of national and local clients, from the RSPB to Manchester Museum of Science and Industry.
In 1999 he was the moving force behind setting up the leading community media charity Radio Regen (www.radioregen.org) working in community engagement and creating community solutions from the ground up. This work led to a place on the Board of the Manchester Local Strategic Partnership where he sits as an independent member, ensuring a high profile for sustainable development in the City’s overarching strategies. Phil was also a lead lobbyist in the successful campaign establishing legislation for community radio – working with ministers and civil servants to that end. He is still Director of Radio Regen, working part-time there as Cooler grows.
In 2007 Phil was one of the founders of the high-level climate change advocacy network The 100 Months Club, which in turn led to involvement in the drafting of the city’s climate change action plan: Manchester: A Certain Future, (www.manchesterclimate.com) as part of which he led the ‘Buildings’ writing group. He still contributes to the MACF Steering Group and is also a member of the Board of Manchester’s Local Strategic Partnership.
Emma is our Head of Development. She is tasked with driving the development of The Carbon Literacy Project; leading our Finance, Fundraising, and Communications Teams; improving internal processes, for current and future demand; and identifying new opportunities for collaboration.
Emma has worked with CLP, in varying capacities, since 2015. As one of the first accredited Carbon Literacy Trainers, Emma has delivered CL training within organisations across England, France and Germany. Emma also undertook an internship with CLP during the final year of her BSc Geography, before joining the staff team.
Emma’s experience within the wider environmental and sustainability sector includes work with – Manchester Climate Change Agency; Manchester Met University Environment Team; and, Manchester Museum as part of Climate Exchange. Emma currently sits on the Yorkshire and Humber Climate Commission (YHCC) in the role of Commissioner.
Additionally, Emma’s public engagement on climate communication and action is wide-ranging, spanning youth development (GM100; MMU Careers); panels (MMU – Global Science, Local Impact: Smart Cities; YHCC Climate Action Plan); and festivals (Blue Dot; Kendal Mountain Festival; ARS Electronica).
Emma has been recognised in edie’s ’30 Under 30′ Class of 2023 for her work on climate and Carbon Literacy.
Helen is our Head of Operations; she oversees the recruitment of our team, HR system, and management of our volunteers, as well as supporting and delegating responsibilities to our wider team. She also coordinates our external communications, maintains our customer relationship management system and supports advocacy.
Helen began volunteering with The Carbon Literacy Project in March 2018, before joining the team as Project Administrator, later in the year, after graduating from a BA Human Geography. Prior to this Helen had undertaken Carbon Literacy training, and then become certified as a Carbon Literacy Trainer in 2017, at Manchester Metropolitan University. Helen has delivered multiple days of training to students at Manchester Met, as well as the world’s first Carbon Literacy for Labs session at The University of Manchester.
Helen is passionate about communicating to, and enlightening individuals about their potential to mitigate climate change within the various aspects of their lives, whether that be in a personal, social, professional or political capacity. Helen has also engaged the public in carbon reduction at Blue Dot Festival, and undertook a year of study at California State University San Marcos.
Fiona started volunteering with The Carbon Literacy Project in November 2017 and joined the team as our Certification and IT Coordinator in May 2019. Now our Head of IT & Systems, Fiona works to develop and maintain our IT and email systems.
Natalia is our Head of Advocacy. She oversees the Sector Toolkits Team and the General Advocacy Team, driving forward the number of sectors and organisations that are delivering Carbon Literacy training.
Natalia began volunteering with The Project in June 2018 and joined the team to develop and deliver a new innovative approach to rolling out CL training through the creation of Sector Toolkits. Funded by BEIS (Government Department for Business, Energy, and Industrial Strategy) Natalia and colleagues created a suite of Public Sector Toolkits for the NHS, Universities and Colleges, Local Authorities and the Civil Service. Since then, this approach has been replicated in a range of other sectors including Social Housing, Automotive, Museums and Sport.
Natalia’s work involves supporting the Sectoral Coordinators with the continued outreach and support for their sectors, and working with our partner organisations to pioneer Carbon Literacy Toolkits in new sectors.
After a change in career direction and much time spent undertaking online courses related to environmental matters, Ruth began volunteering with The Carbon Literacy Project in January 2021 and joined the team as Project Officer in June of the same year. Ruth’s work focuses on helping to develop a new toolkit for the automotive industry alongside organisational partner Auto Trader.
Ruth’s academic background is in chemistry, in which she holds a Masters.
Jack began volunteering for The Carbon Literacy Project in August 2020, joining the Sector Toolkits team a year later. Since joining, Jack’s work has included overseeing the development of new Carbon Literacy Toolkits for the museum and sports sectors.
As Cultural Sector Coordinator, Jack is now focused on the development of Carbon Literacy programmes in the wider arts, culture & heritage spheres, and is supporting upcoming initiatives for theatres, heritage organisations, libraries, archives, arts and more.
Jack started his career in third sector/arts marketing but decided to return to university to explore his interest in the environment. He retains a keen interest in the intersection between culture, social justice, and the environment, and thinks that culture can play a vital role in a just response to the climate crisis.
Sarah has worked in education, for over sixteen years, in the UK and multiple international contexts including Vietnam, Myanmar, Borneo and the UAE. She has held diverse roles in teaching, teacher training and mentoring, and has worked as an academic lead and manager.
After studying an MSc in Education for Sustainability, she now works as the Education Coordinator at The Carbon Literacy Project. Here she works with nearly 200 educational institutions, helping them to embed Carbon Literacy training to support a shift towards a low carbon culture whilst accelerating the transition to a zero-carbon world.
Anna started her Carbon Literacy journey as a student, taking the training as an extracurricular during her foundation year. She actually did her Carbon Literacy training twice with the course then being part of her first-year induction week! Before doing the training, she thought she knew a lot about the climate crisis, though soon realised that her knowledge barely touched the surface and continually strives to learn as much as she can about all thing’s climate change related.
After becoming Carbon Literate, Anna became a student trainer at her university teaching other students and staff. As a student, Anna started volunteering at the Project and completed her placement in the Carbon Literacy Education team and afterwards became the Education Officer. She now works as the Further and Higher Education Coordinator supporting those in the sector in delivering Carbon Literacy at their educational institution.
Helen joined the team in October 2023 as Healthcare and Bluelight Coordinator. She has experience within the healthcare sector, working as a critical care nurse, predominantly in the field of neurology and neurosurgery. Helen holds a BSC in Environment Design and Management and a Master’s in Business Administration (MBA). She has been working in sustainability for the last five years, predominantly delivering Carbon Literacy training to businesses and supporting SMEs with embedding sustainability and carbon management.
Helen is looking forward to combining her skills to build the number of Carbon Literate healthcare professionals and support the healthcare sector to decarbonise.
Her preferred habitat is within the Peak District hills, or on her Narrowboat.
Sojan started his Carbon Literacy journey as a student, taking the training as an extracurricular during his Master’s at Sheffield Hallam University. With a background in Built Environment and a recent MSc in Construction Project Management, Sojan previously worked as a Site Engineer in Muscat.
Joining as a placement student at the Project and completing his placement in the Sector Toolkits team as the Healthcare Officer, Sojan works as the Healthcare and Social Housing Officer supporting those in both the public and private sectors in delivering Carbon Literacy within their organisations.
Lucia began volunteering with The Carbon Literacy Project in April 2021 while studying MSc Environmental Governance, taking responsibility for managing our social media channels to grow awareness of and engagement with Carbon Literacy. Hooked by the power of communication to foster climate action, Lucia left education to join our staff team full-time in August 2021 as a Communications Officer.
In January 2023, she took up the position of Communications Coordinator, before going on to become the Marketing & Communications Lead in August 2024, where she now oversees a growing and increasingly specialised team and its work across our various digital and creative communication channels.
In her spare time, you can find her out in nature, either cycling, running, or hiking!
After being introduced to The Carbon Literacy Project in February 2020, Catherine volunteered as a Social Media Assistant upon completion of her degree in Marketing. Catherine joined the Staff Team in August 2021 as Communications Officer, where she enjoys sharing vital and engaging communications around climate change and action.
Saaniya began volunteering with The Carbon Literacy Project in December 2022, mainly focussing on social media content. Soon after, she joined the Staff Team in January 2023 as a Communications Officer. Saaniya started her career in the fashion industry, but after coming face-to-face with the sustainability issues in the sector, she decided to pursue a Master’s in Sustainability Management. She believes that making sustainability fun and accessible to all is critical to driving mainstream change.
Emily is our Fundraising Officer. She supports the generation of income for The Carbon Literacy Project and The Carbon Literacy Trust. Working with business development colleagues and delivery staff, she helps to identify income sources, approach funders and partners, develop and write bids, and contribute towards the annual income of The Carbon Literacy Project. Prior to joining the Carbon Literacy Project, Emily worked as a freelance fundraiser for charities including Switch It, MUVA and Foundations Earth. She has a passion for championing youth participation in the climate justice movement and volunteers as a fundraiser with two youth climate justice movements: the ‘UK Youth Climate Coalition’ (UKYCC) and ‘Me & Youth’.Emily’s undergraduate & postgraduate degrees at the University of Exeter also focused on the politics of climate change & sustainable development.
Ellie is the Finance Officer for The Carbon Literacy Project; she is responsible for several duties related to managing financial records, keeping the books, invoicing and payments.
Ellie joined the team as Bookkeeper in 2020 on a part-time basis, to help further her experience in the wider environmental and sustainability sector, alongside interning at the Manchester Climate Change Agency, after graduating with a BSc Geography from Manchester Metropolitan University. She moved into the role of Finance Officer in 2022.
Ellie’s experience within the wider environmental and sustainability sector includes: Work with Manchester Climate Change Agency – Ellie is currently the Programme and Finance Officer at MCCA, where she is responsible for the smooth running of the day-to-day operations of the Agency and working all workstreams to strengthen climate change action across the City. Ellie also took part in the Uprising Environmental Leaders Programme over 2021.
Ashley joined the team as Project Officer in early 2022. Originally from the USA, she has a background in communications and holds an MA in Library and Information Management from Manchester Metropolitan University. Her main duties include managing general enquiries for the CLP and answering the office phone. She also works with the Advocacy Team to help coordinate enquiries about Carbon Literacy from interested organisations. In her spare time, Ashley enjoys sewing and is keen on sustainable crafts.
Georgina is our Trainer Network Coordinator dealing with training-related enquiries and Accredited Carbon Literacy Trainer applications.
Georgina has held senior leadership and management roles in local authorities and the social housing sector. Her experience covers a range of disciplines, including Sustainability, Carbon Reduction, and Housing Standards; developing and implementing collaborative strategies and projects with multi-agency partners and residents to address decarbonisation, energy security and energy affordability. She is also a Non-Executive Director and Trustee for a Housing Association in Staffordshire.
Georgina is an accredited Carbon Literacy Trainer and has extensive experience in delivering training to social housing associations and local authorities, working across all tiers within the organisation. She is passionate and enthusiastic about enabling and delivering innovative carbon reduction solutions and achieving positive results.
Dan started work with the Project as a Certification Officer and stepped up to become Certification Coordinator in March 2023. His role includes overseeing the certification process, dealing with clients’ evidence-related queries, managing our CLP Certificate Database, as well as helping out with Salesforce admin.
With a BSc in Wildlife Biology from the Manchester Metropolitan University, Dan is passionate about protecting the planet’s future for the good of human, plant, and animal life. He loves working with the CLP and knows that as we expand further, the impact and influence we have to curb the climate crisis can only become greater.
Nicole began her Carbon Literacy journey as a placement student in 2021. After graduating with a BSc in Geography, and a greater passion for the outdoors and environmental education, she joined the team full-time.
Part of her role involves supporting various work in the operations team, including course accreditation, certification and in the Trainer Network. Nicole is also an officer for the new Carbon Literate Localities accreditation.
In 2021, during her undergraduate degree at Manchester Metropolitan University, Emily qualified as a qualified Carbon Literacy Trainer, facilitating training for university staff and students.
After graduating with a BSc in Wildlife Biology in 2023, she began working at the Carbon Literacy Project on the Certification Team. Now as the Criteria Checking Coordinator, she manages the Criteria Checking team and liaises with clients to accredit incoming Carbon Literacy courses and toolkits.
With her roots in student-led climate activism and deep fascination with plant and animal life, she is passionate about advocating for climate action to protect future generations and the natural world.
Josh joined the Carbon Literacy Project in June 2023 as the HR Officer after actively following the group’s progress since 2019 whilst researching further education and volunteer opportunities. His position involves supporting colleagues and volunteers at the Carbon Literacy Project, managing the HR systems and taking a key role in the onboarding and development of the team.
He has an academic background in Environmental Science through a BSc in Climate Change and a more recent MSc in Environmental Change and International Development. These were broken up by an extensive period working in multiple financial roles which included advisory positions, system design projects and in training/recruitment.
Josh is passionate about nature and enjoys engaging with local environmental and re-wilding projects, creative writing and playing sports in his free time.
Tega joined The Carbon Literacy Project in September 2022 as a Placement Project Officer. In this initial role, he supported the certification and the criteria-checking team with certifying new learners and accrediting new courses. He was also involved in various administrative tasks, including promoting placement/internship vacancies on career websites and using Salesforce to manage contacts.
He is now a member of the Certification team where his role involves reviewing evidence forms. He is also a recent BSc Environmental Management and Sustainability graduate, dedicated to the decarbonisation movement and passionate about driving sustainability into the built environment.
Sarfraz joined The Carbon Literacy Project in July 2021 as a volunteer Project Officer while studying for a master’s in Business Analytics at the Manchester Metropolitan University. He carries several years of working experience in large-scale and small-scale education-related projects with different national and international organisations in Pakistan.
In February 2023, Sarfraz joined the staff team as a full-time Certification Officer. He is responsible for evidence processing, certifying learners, overseeing the certification process, and helping with Salesforce database certification admin. He believes he is contributing towards a positive change in society while working with the CLP.
Lucas’ involvement in the Carbon Literacy family began in July 2022. He started as a Project Intern, supporting the operations and advocacy teams during his academic placement. After an enjoyable year his role was refined to Accreditation Officer, focusing on criteria checking courses while he finished his Politics and International Relations BSc at the University of Bath. Alongside his university work and accreditation role, he ran the Bath Snowsports Society while volunteering as a University Coordinator for Protect Our Winters UK.
After graduating, Lucas returned to Carbon Literacy as a full-time employee. Building on his past experience and his love for sport, he has taken on a new role of Sport and Project Officer. In this position, he supports the Sport Coordinator to increase Carbon Literacy’s outreach within the sports sector whilst continuing to accredit courses and support new members in the Criteria Checking team. He is also currently supporting Co-Founder Phil Korbel on project development work.
Chloé began her journey with The Carbon Literacy Project as a volunteer, focusing on introducing Carbon Literacy within the fashion sector. With a background in the fashion industry, specialising in marketing and events, she became increasingly aware of the industry’s environmental impact and its role in climate change. This realisation fueled her passion to use fashion as a platform for positive change, promoting sustainable practices and a low-carbon culture.
Chloé transitioned to a full-time role at CLP as the CLAD (Carbon Literacy Action Day) Coordinator and Project Advocate. In this capacity, she coordinates the annual global campaign, uniting organisation’s and individuals from diverse sectors for simultaneous training, empowering them to take action during the United Nations COP summit each year. Additionally, she supports organisations on their Carbon Literacy journey, helping them access or develop Carbon Literacy courses and delivering the course(s) widely, achieve CLO (Carbon Literacy Organisation) badge recognition for their impact, and explore collaboration opportunities to support organisations walking the walk to amplify their work and spread Carbon Literacy globally.
Christiane is part of the Advocacy Team at The Carbon Literacy Project. Having previously worked as a Carbon Literacy Trainer, she has helped numerous SMEs, local authorities and residents on their journey to reducing their carbon emissions.
Christiane has a background in business, having studied French and Business at Hull University and is qualified in Business Sustainability Management as certified by the University of Cambridge’s Institute for Sustainability Leadership. Throughout her career, she has gained extensive knowledge from managerial and training roles both in the Food and the Fashion Retail Sectors.
On her latest project before joining The Carbon Literacy Project, Christiane has worked with De Montfort University and the Universities Partnership Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland to deliver courses and support to local SMEs on how to decarbonise their businesses and become more sustainable.
Ted began volunteering with The Carbon Literacy Project in November 2022 after 7 years of working in market research & insights that specialised in the hospitality sector. Ted joined the staff team as a joint Project Advocate & Salesforce Coordinator in May 2023. In his Advocacy role, Ted supported numerous organisations, from across multiple sectors, to progress through their Carbon Literacy journey. Since 2025, Ted has progressed to a new Accreditation Lead role, helping to oversee our certification, course creation and Carbon Literate Organisation accreditation teams.
Kate administers our e-learning resource, Carbon Literacy; Knowledge, designed to provide learners with an understanding of the science behind climate change.
After graduating with a degree in History, Kate began her career, most of which has been spent in Training and Development roles in a range of sectors including insurance, healthcare and retail. She returned to full-time education to gain a Masters in Managerial Psychology after which she worked as a freelance Development Consultant for 5 years before re-joining the corporate world at one of the “Big 5” retailers.
A qualified performance and career coach, she was responsible for setting up an online Leadership Development resource, providing bespoke consultancy to managers and 1-1 leadership coaching. As a Senior Talent Development Specialist, Kate worked with the Executive Team to identify and develop their teams and individuals as part of a succession planning process.
Alongside her responsibilities at The Carbon Literacy Project, Kate continues many years spent as a volunteer in the Community, currently as a Helpline Volunteer providing emotional and practical support for the MS Society.
Aman joined The Carbon Literacy Project in September 2023 as a Security & IT Systems Intern during his placement year at the University of Hertfordshire. After completing his placement, he transitioned to a dual role as Security (IT Systems) and Salesforce Officer. In this capacity, he ensures the security of the organisation’s systems while also contributing to their ongoing development and maintenance.
Aman has been a nature lover since childhood, and his passion for environmental sustainability found its true alignment during his Master’s in Cyber Security. This unique opportunity allowed him to combine his two key interests: technology and environmental protection. By securing both digital and natural environments, Aman is dedicated to fostering a sustainable and secure future. He is also a certified Carbon Literate individual, reinforcing his commitment to environmental responsibility.
Phoebe began volunteering at The Carbon Literacy Project in 2022 as a CLAD volunteer and has since moved from the Certification Team to the Sector Toolkits Team. As the Cultural Sector Officer, Phoebe now focuses on advocating for the development of Carbon Literacy Courses in the wider arts and cultural spaces, whilst encouraging organisations to engage with our Cultural Sector Shareable Courses created for cultural professionals by cultural organisations.
Phoebe was keen to join the Cultural Sector Team due to her creative passion across both Theatre and Arts. With a BSc in Geography from the University of Sheffield, Phoebe is passionate about educating others about their potential to mitigate climate change and take action in their own lives.
After completing her Master’s degree in Advertising and Marketing from the University of Leeds, Sara embarked on her journey as a Communications Intern. Committed to continuous learning, her newfound passion revolves around knowledge, innovation, and driving positive change towards sustainability.
Ella joined the team in March 2023 as Project Officer as part of an internship she gained through the 10,000 Black Interns Scheme. As a Sociology undergraduate at The University of Manchester, she has a particular interest in the different ways we can create connections throughout communities across the world through Carbon Literacy training. Ella is a member of the Criteria Checking team where her responsibilites focus on processing a wide range of courses from different sectors and providing them all with tailored feedback in order for them to successfully deliver Carbon Literacy training. She has also been introduces to tasks such as invoicing and using the Salesforce database.
Lizzie started at the Carbon Literacy Project in September of 2023 as a placement student. She enjoyed the role so much she decided to stay working at the Project and is now working alongside her university studies. Her role at the Project involves spending time supporting all sectors of the project with any general IT issues or queries. She enjoys this very much and is happy she is able to help the project to run smoothly. She also studies Geography at university, one of her favourite modules being ‘Introduction to Quaternary Micropalaeontology’ as she enjoys looking at all the beautiful fossils and using them to understand past environments.
Daanish Nazeer joined The CLP in September 2023 as a part of his Placement Year as a General Project Intern and now works as a Freelance Criteria Checking Officer, reviewing Carbon Literacy courses for a myriad of sectors, assisting the Certification Team when available.
Soon after joining the team, Daanish became Carbon Literate himself, showing a significant interest in the damage extreme climate change can have, especially in terms of Climate Refugees. This is significant as he is completing his BSc in Criminology with Psychology in 2025, and as the Earth experiences extreme shifts in population, Daanish believes that the policing and Criminological Penal system in the UK must adapt to accommodate the influx of Climate Refugees.
Grace joined the Project in December 2023 as a Certification Officer. In April 2024, she became the Carbon Literacy Action Day (CLAD) Officer and supports the CLAD Advocate with delivering the Project’s annual education and training day. Before joining the Project, she worked in various communications roles in the Civil Service for 4 years, supporting ministers and senior officials to engage with stakeholders on high-priority topics including higher and further education, counter-fraud policy, COP26 and the Net Zero Strategy. Grace cares strongly about making the world more equitable, as reflected by her volunteering in the UK and further afield. She is keen to ensure that everyone is empowered to make positive changes to their lives to mitigate the impact of climate change.
After 7 years in the Sports and Technology industries, Ravi began his sustainability journey in 2022, when he realised that there should be more technological solutions to enable citizens to take action to protect the planet. Realising there was more to learn, he studied towards a Postgraduate Certificate in Sustainability Leadership with Cambridge University and, midway through his studies, joined The Carbon Literacy Project as Digital and Technology Sector Coordinator. Ravi works to empower businesses to increase their awareness of the carbon costs of their everyday activities and thereby reduce their emissions. He is driven by the concept of education-led approaches to solving the climate crisis from all angles. Away from work, Ravi is a keen sports enthusiast and musician and can often be spotted at a cricket stadium or playing the piano.
Myriam moved to Manchester in 2015 to study at the University of Manchester, where she fell in love with the city and never left! After a career change to start her journey in the environment sector, she joined the Carbon Literacy project as a Certification Officer in April 2024.
Originally from Italy and raised by parents working in the food industry, alongside her passion for all things food, she jumped at the opportunity to take on the Food SMEs Officer role. Myriam is eager to assist those in the food value chain in accessing Carbon Literacy and helping to shape the future of the food industry.
Abby joined The Carbon Literacy Project as Local Authorities Coordinator in January 2024 after a decade in education, spent as a primary teacher and curriculum developer. She is a charity trustee (Wicked Weather Watch), has a background in arts and environmental public engagement events and holds an MSc in Education for Sustainability. Her research project saw her create and pilot a course of climate change education for teachers, with a focus on empowering teachers to approach climate anxiety with their students proactively, and for those students to find their own empowerment through taking action locally.
Since then, Abby has worked with the Natural History Consortium as an event and volunteer manager, researcher and consultant with organisations such as Natural England, the West of England Combined Authority, Forest of Avon Trust and more on topics ranging from accessibility of our green spaces, to Local Nature Recovery Strategies, to Green Social Prescribing and more. She was also delighted to be the Nature lead for the Sparks Bristol project, a sustainable department store using the UN Sustainable Development Goals to platform local projects whilst envisioning what the high streets of the future could look like. She is passionate about climate justice, action research approaches to problem-solving and believes in amplifying community voices alongside cutting-edge research to foster regenerative outcomes.
Harriet joined the Carbon Literacy Project in 2024, after 12 years as a bespoke travel specialist. Harriet’s interest in climate change began while studying Geography at the University of Nottingham, furthered by recent study of Carbon Management and a certification in Understanding Environmental Sustainability.
Harriet is passionate about making sustainable choices and low-carbon changes within her household, and is engaged in a community project to reduce food waste. Harriet’s role at the Project is to support organisations on their Carbon Literacy journey, helping to embed sustainability throughout businesses and to affect real change.
With an MSc in Food Security from the University of Glasgow, Tony’s previous work has focused on the food and drink sector, where he developed sustainability reports and life cycle assessments that help identify the areas where carbon reductions can be made across a product or service’s entire value chain. As a passionate cyclist, Tony has previously delivered courses as a Carbon Literacy Facilitator and developed courses for outdoor and sporting communities, allowing him to be an advocate for change amongst his peers. He enjoys being able help people understand the latest climate science by relating it directly their own lives and communities.
Annabel joined the team in 2024 as our Events Coordinator. Originally from Australia, Annabel has a BA in Fashion Design and relocated to the UK in 2019 to work in the fashion industry. She began her career as a designer, but quickly started to see the industry’s environmental impact. This led her to pursue a Master’s in Sustainability Management & Innovation, graduating in 2023.
Throughout her career, Annabel always had a keen interest in events. She assisted in producing club nights, music festivals, and fashion shows. Within her degree she also focused a lot of her projects on the events industry and how we can lower its impact on the planet.
Annabel’s role consists of coordinating all CLP events such as trainer networking days, the CLO & CLE awards, and many other celebrations.
Linda’s background is in youth work, education, social justice and environmental activism. Linda is a councillor who works with many partners, across all political parties, to share policies to make life better for people now and for future generations. Linda is passionate about Carbon Literacy Training as an effective tool to help people and organisations to reduce their carbon footprint and push for change. Her role with the Carbon Literacy Project is to support the delivery of the Carbon Literate Educator’s Award in secondary schools and help Manchester in its ambition to become the first Carbon Literate City in the world.
Amber recently began her role as an Operations Intern at The CLP as part of her placement year. She is currently pursuing a BA in business management and is eager to gain insights into the operations function at CLP while contributing to a cause she is passionate about. She hopes to take everything she learns in this experience forward to guide future actions and workplaces. Amber is strongly interested in promoting green spaces in urban areas and homes and enjoys reading in natural settings.
Shree joined The Carbon Literacy Project in March 2021 and since then has supported the Communications and Certifications Teams. She started out with audience research for blogs and social media communications and now supports the Project fully with evidence processing and certifying learners. Shree has 6+ years of experience in brand strategy and management and is currently studying a Master’s in Sustainability. Through the Project, she feels hopeful about enabling learners to achieve a positive impact and learning about people’s awareness on the subject to further stay committed to the work required in this space.
Fritha joined the Carbon Literacy Project in 2024 as the Events Support and Administration Intern after following the work of the Project online for several years. She joined the Project whilst studying part-time for a MSc in Environmental Governance at the University of Manchester, where she holds particular interest in understanding the different ways climate change is impacting diverse communities and how to go about successfully engaging these groups in climate action. Fritha first developed a passion for taking action on climate change as an undergraduate student. She became involved in running campaigns addressing fossil fuel divestment and expanding climate change awareness. As part of her role in the Operations Team and offering events support to the Carbon Literacy Project, Fritha hopes to assist others with growing their own passion for climate change action and develop supportive and inclusive spaces for Carbon Literate individuals to come together and share their experiences.
Erika joined the team in January 2024 as a Finance Officer. Her introduction to the Project came in the form of a Carbon Literacy training hosted by the University of York in 2023, where she earned her degree in MSc Corporate Sustainability and Environmental Management.
Hailing from Manila, Erika worked for over 5 years in the financial services sector before deciding to leave the industry and pursue postgraduate study in the UK. She is passionate about equality, empowerment and the environment, and strives to embody these in her lifestyle choices and profession.
Having recently graduated from Manchester Metropolitan University with a BSc in Human Geography, Otto became Carbon Literate in December 2020, before going on to facilitate teaching over his 3 years in Manchester. Following the completion of his degree, he joined the project full-time as a Certification Officer in July 2024. His true passion lies in Urban Planning, aiming to work with developers to create truly sustainable communities within the global south.
Hannah joined the Carbon Literacy Project in July 2024, as part of a placement year, between her second and third year of study in Social Anthropology at the University of Manchester. Within and outside of academia, Hannah has always been passionate about sustainability, having been involved with various environmental charities and campaigns. As Digital Communications Intern, Hannah is excited to utilise her enthusiasm for climate education and experience in marketing to help the project grow and develop as it reaches 100,000 learners.
Lumbani started her journey with The Carbon Literacy Project in July 2024 as a Finance Intern, fulfilling a placement year within her Economics course at the University of Plymouth. She has always had an interest in sustainability and climate change, encouraging her family to implement more climate friendly energy sources such as solar panels on their properties as well as urging them to be more conscious of how everyday actions could possibly impact the state of the world.
As a Finance Intern, Lumbani works to help with the financial processes that happen within The Carbon Literacy Project both internally and externally. She is excited to use and develop her skillset whilst simultaneously working to help grow The Project, continuing to make an impact where she can in order to see our world flourish.
Harry joined the Carbon Literacy Project as an Operations Intern in 2024. He has been following the project’s work since completing his Carbon Literacy training in early 2023. He has joined the project as a placement student as part of his BA (Hons) Human Geography and Environment degree at the University of York. Throughout his degree, he has had a passion for advocating sustainable practices by being involved as his college’s Head of Events and Environment and Ethics officer in which he has run environmentally conscious activities throughout his tenure.
He has thoroughly enjoyed his placement so fair, aiding in HR, Certification, Criteria Checking and the CLO team, and is very excited to continue his work throughout the placement to aid in the change of societal attitudes and reach a climate-conscious future.
Einass joined The Carbon Literacy Project as part of the Certification Team. She has an MSc in Nature, Society and Environmental Governance, where her passion for environmental advocacy deepened. Einass is excited about the international growth of Carbon Literacy and the opportunity to collaborate on climate solutions. Beyond her work here, Einass is actively involved in advancing climate projects in the Global South.
Razvan started his journey with CLP in July 2024, joining the team as an IT & Systems Intern, as part of his Placement Year at Sheffield Hallam University. He’s part of the IT team, managing, developing and ensuring that systems are up to date and running smoothly, with a particular focus on AI involvement in the work of the Project. He is very passionate about programming, alongside geography and history.
After doing a Foundation Year in Computer Science in 2020, he decided to temporarily return to his birthplace Romania for 1 year to pursue a Full-Stack Development bootcamp and successfully managed to graduate it. After finishing, he returned to the UK to pursue his BSc (Hons) in Computer Science with Artificial Intelligence, to promote sustainable technology practices and build bridges for people around the world. He has strong proficiency in multiple programming languages and practices, database administration and security. In his free time, he enjoys practising sports, reading history, and listening to music.
Nicola is a Business Sector Advocate with The Carbon Literacy Project, working within the Advocacy Team. She researches and develops Carbon Literacy training resources, and has overseen the development of a new Carbon Literacy Toolkit for Elected Members alongside supporting the creation of the BEIS-funded Carbon Literacy Public Sector Toolkits.
Nicola has a background in science communications and studied physics at the University of Manchester. She went on to become a project manager in various sectors, ultimately focusing on the environmental issues surrounding land use and agriculture after becoming acutely aware of climate change as the defining issue of our time. She also works as a Carbon Literacy trainer within the food sector working with organisations like Proper, Fairtrade Manchester and Quorn.
Farah joined as a volunteer in 2022. She now works in the Advocacy team supporting businesses on their Carbon Literacy journey and coordinating CLP advocacy events. She is the advocacy lead for Finance sector CL training and leads the Earth4All partnership.
She has a background in water resources management and climate change from SOAS London (CEDEP dept), where she has worked in association with Fauna and Flora International in collaboration with British American Tobacco and Mataram University, Indonesia spearheading water projects for cocoa farmers and women in agriculture. Prior to this, she worked in translation and teaching in Shanghai, China completing her research MLitt in Chinese studies at Newcastle University focusing on anthropology, migration/exile and completed her fieldwork research with communities based in Shanghai.
Farah has lived and worked in China, Kenya, Indonesia, Spain, and Italy on educational and environmental campaigns and projects centred around human rights, water and climate change issue and brings this lived global experience to her training. She has designed and delivered her 10th CLP business train the trainer and currently delivers Carbon Literacy and sustainability training to global corporates with an emphasis on climate justice across supply chains.
Dheepika embarked on her journey with The Carbon Literacy Project in May 2023, dedicating 2-3 months to volunteering while concurrently honing her Data Analytics skills at CareerFoundry. Notable achievements include identifying opportunities in automating data workflows and process improvements. Transitioning to the role of Data Analyst in August 2023, she spearheads critical data management tasks, ensuring data accuracy for bulk imports into Salesforce. Leveraging SQL, Python, Excel, and Tableau, she extracts insights from raw datasets, creating reports and dashboards for real-time business monitoring. Her proficiency extends to utilizing the LinkedIn API via Python for enhanced data tasks.
Beyond the world of data, she finds joy in organizing and cooking. Inspired by the impactful works of The Carbon Literacy Project, she has developed a deep affinity for sustainable and eco-living practices, manifesting in her increased interest in opting for eco-friendly products in her day-to-day life.
With a foundation of International Master in Business from SDA Bocconi, she draws from a robust career, including roles as a Senior Account Manager in WP Engine (UK) and BrowserStack (India). Committed to continuous learning, she thrives in her current Data career, contributing impactful solutions and driving success.
Anne has always been passionate about the environment. She first became aware of the fragility of our planet from hearing news reports as a child of the ’80s, watching the destruction of the rainforests, the devastating oil spills and the hole in the ozone layer. This spurred her to gain an undergraduate degree in Environmental Science from the University of Leeds, and a Masters in Conservation Biology from Manchester Metropolitan University. She’s worked on ecologically focused projects in Africa, won awards at a climate change solution competition at MIT University, and contributed to the IUCN’s Red List, an inventory of the global conservation status of biological species at the Institute of Zoology at London Zoo. She has eco-renovated a property, chaired a local climate action group, was a spokesperson for a divestment campaign and was the climate champion of her hometown. She established The Sustainable Life Coach to empower others to become eco-confident in their lifestyles and businesses through Carbon Literacy training, coaching, webinars, workshops and net zero accelerator programmes.
Holly started volunteering with Carbon Literacy in March 2023 and became a Certification Officer in January 2024, and is now our CLO Coordinator. Holly completed an MA in Music in Development at SOAS, University of London, in 2022. Her academic research focused on exploring solutions for sustainability and waste management within UK Music festivals, and featured elements of eco-musicology, environmental activism, and eco-psychology. Holly’s key interests lie in the potential for festivals as sites of innovation that provide opportunities to promote and explore radical and creative environmental solutions both within the festival context and in broader society. Holly is a qualified HGV driver and has experience in event logistics, and municipal and large-scale event waste management. Holly works annually as the Campsite Waste Manager within Glastonbury Festival, UK.
Melissa joined The Carbon Literacy Project as a Certification Officer in March 2024. After graduating from university, she worked on a charity project in local government and as a Teaching Assistant, during which time she became Carbon Literate. From 2022 to 2024, she undertook an MSc in Sustainable Food and Natural Resources at the Centre for Alternative Technology Graduate School.
Darina is a placement-year student working within the Communications Team, where she focuses on updating and maintaining branded resources to ensure consistent, high-quality materials across externally facing communications.
Working with The Carbon Literacy Project resonates deeply with her passion for design and commitment to environmental sustainability, allowing her to apply design practices to bring climate change awareness and shape a more ecologically sustainable future. She believes that impactful design can play a significant role in advancing sustainable practices through effective communication using visual language, and this placement allows her to explore the practical applications of design in the context of carbon sustainability and climate change action.
She is pursuing a degree in Interactive Media at the University of York, specialising in Graphic, Motion and UX/UI Design and marketing. Her studies emphasise design theory, human-computer interaction and marketing strategies, integrating creative and technical approaches to digital media. In her free time, Darina pursues her love for nature and the outdoors through rock climbing, mountaineering, hiking, and filmmaking, all of which further her passion for sustainability and curious exploration.
Toby is our Partnerships Officer. He builds partnerships with external organisations to help The Carbon Literacy Project grow through income generation. Working with teams across the charity – from advocacy to marketing – he seeks to amplify the impact of The Carbon Literacy Project by creating impactful relationships and initiatives with aligned partners to drive forward our mission.
Beginning his career in the technology startup world, he helped to grow two social enterprises from early-stage technologies into sector-leading companies by putting people at the heart of the change they wanted to see. He has since worked as a Principal Consultant for a global engineering consultancy before launching into freelance consulting. For his work in CivicTech and engineering, he was recognised as a Next Generation Leader in the Built Environment – in part for his role in designing the UK’s first Digital Climate Assembly. Seeing the wonderful impact The Carbon Literacy Project has through enabling people to live the solution to the climate emergency, he saw an opportunity to bring his experience in creating long-lasting partnerships to help grow this impact.
David joined the Carbon Literacy Project as our Community Funds Officer in 2024. He is tasked with managing the Project’s Community Pot, a scheme which aims to improve access to Carbon Literacy training for those who might be facing funding barriers.
Since 2022, David has been working within the higher education sector as a Programmes Manager, developing and organising global mobility programmes for disadvantaged students. David has delivered Carbon Literacy and Climate Fresk workshops for universities such as King’s College London, University of Liverpool and Cardiff University to name a few. David is a creative problem-solver who is passionate about using his skills to make a difference. Whether it’s streamlining operational processes, designing eye-catching digital content, or capturing the essence of an experience through photography, David is always looking for ways to innovate and improve.
Eleanor joined The Carbon Literacy Project in November 2024 as a Local Authorities Officer. She previously worked at a Local Authority within their HR department for 8 years, where she became Carbon Literate and knew Local Government had a huge part to play in tackling climate change. She also gained a degree in Zoology at the University of Leeds, which included studying the effects climate change has on ecosystems, animal behaviour, and physiology. She has a passion for wildlife and has previously volunteered in Malta to expose the illegal trapping and hunting of migratory birds.
Eleanor was born in Manchester but now lives near the Peak District National Park with her partner and dog, Busby, who they rescued in 2021. She enjoys walking in the Peaks and growing fruit and vegetables on her allotment.
Lydia holds a master’s degree in Sustainability and has worked in sustainability education for several years before joining the Carbon Literacy Project as an Education Officer.
She is passionate about educating people about climate change and sharing a positive message that focuses on solutions and actions. Lydia is proud to work with the Carbon Literacy Project and to promote their goal of offering every citizen Carbon Literacy Training.
Rebecca joined The Carbon Literacy Project as Schools Coordinator. She has previously worked in schools for twenty years, seven years as a Headteacher in Cumbria. A United Nations climate course brought about the realisation that climate education for all, and empowering youth, will have the biggest impact on future climate actions and set about working in communication and education to bring that about. Rebecca is currently studying for an MSc in Zero Carbon Communities and is passionate about local, community-based action, and volunteering with local groups.
Marjolein is the Sports Coordinator at The Carbon Literacy Project, leading efforts to embed climate education and action within the sports sector. She works closely with sports organisations, delivering Carbon Literacy training that empowers them to reduce their carbon impact and advocate for meaningful climate action. Her responsibilities include managing and promoting the Carbon Literacy Sports Kit, fostering partnerships, developing engaging content such as case studies and newsletters, and representing Carbon Literacy at sector events.
A passionate swimmer, runner, cyclist, and climber, Marjolein understands the power of sport to inspire and engage people. Her background includes a BA in German and Russian and a career that began in international sales and sustainability-focused roles. She later launched The Native Crowd, a multilingual communications business dedicated to ethical and sustainable messaging. This unique blend of professional skills and personal dedication to sustainability and sport makes her a committed advocate for climate action within the sporting community.
Katie began working with The Carbon Literacy Project in 2023 as a CLAD volunteer and has since joined the team part-time as a Certification Officer. Before joining The Carbon Literacy Project, Katie enjoyed a varied career working across several sectors, including media production (at a travel media startup) and scientific research (on international marine conservation projects).
Oriana joined The Carbon Literacy team in January 2022 as a Volunteer Project Officer. She completed a BA in Architecture and an MA in Interior Design. While she was studying for her master’s degree at De Montfort University, she got certified as Carbon Literate. Oriana has been interested in sustainability since she was studying architecture in her home country Venezuela. She is committed to making changes in her life that help make positive impacts to the environment and working for The Carbon Literacy Project is one of them. Oriana helps to certify learners as Carbon Literate among other things.
Casey started working for The Carbon Literacy Project in April 2023, and is part of the Certification and Criteria Checking team. Casey completed her Carbon Literacy Training in 2017 whilst studying Ecology and Conservation at Manchester Metropolitan University.
Ele joined the Carbon Literacy Project in 2025 as the Advocacy Communications Coordinator, and is passionate about using communications as a tool to inform and inspire action in tackling climate change. Prior to the Carbon Literacy Project, Ele has worked with the UK Government, research institutions, NGOs and renewable energy providers on projects driving forward innovative climate change solutions on both a national and international level. In her free time, Ele can be found surfing or climbing and is currently pursuing an MSc in Sustainable Development at SOAS University, and is particularly interested in the role of culture in shaping a equitable, sustainable future.
Sarah joined the Carbon Literacy Project as the Trainer Network Engagement Coordinator in 2024. She became aware of the project whilst working with the Society of British Theatre Designers’ Sustainability group. Alongside a group of her peers, she helped to develop a course tailored for Theatre Designers and Theatre Makers, which she has been delivering since 2023. She is passionate about the creative reuse of materials and sharing networks. Prior to and alongside her work at the project, Sarah works as a freelance Set and Costume Designer for Theatre, Opera and Live events. She enjoys cold water swimming, her local spot currently being in the river Medway.
Olivia joined The Carbon Literacy Project in April 2024 as a General Project Intern, supporting climate commitment reviews, diversity training development, and NHS climate research. She continues this work part-time, focusing on research and analysis.
