Double the Impact for Carbon Literate Localities

May 2025 by Emily Marsay

In April, we took part in The Big Give’s Green Match Fund – the UK’s largest match funding campaign dedicated to environmental charities.

Our fundraiser launched on Earth Day, 22nd April 2025, and ran for one week only, providing us with the opportunity to double public donations towards our latest campaign: Carbon Literate Localities!

Earth Day was the perfect time for us to launch our Localities initiative, which aims to facilitate local climate action across the nation.

With the help of the Green Match Fund, donations of all sizes were matched by our supporting match funder, The Big Give Trust. We are so grateful to everyone who chose to support our campaign, and whose donations (and impact) were doubled on Earth Week!

Read on to learn more about Carbon Literate Localities and where the funds raised will go.

Carbon Literate Localities

We are on a mission to connect all those who are currently certified as Carbon Literate within a given locality, bringing the public, private and third sectors together so that they can work holistically and more effectively towards shared climate action goals.

This mission will enable Carbon Literate organisations and individuals within a given area to become defined as ‘Carbon Literate Localities’; a term that describes when a local area, in response to local demand, commits to having 15% of the population trained as Carbon Literate.

We will work to ensure that these individuals can work together in local communities of practice, so that the whole may be greater than the sum of its parts. We are so excited for a future in which Carbon Literate Cities, Boroughs, Counties and Districts can thrive – so watch this space!

The Results

Thanks to the incredible support of the Carbon Literacy community, we are thrilled to share that we raised £6,216.25 including Gift Aid, from 45 individuals and organisations, in combination with our match funding partner The Big Give Trust!

All funds raised via the Green Match Fund will go directly towards the development of our Carbon Literate Localities Standard, and helping new passionate local areas sign up for the Localities movement.

We are particularly interested in hearing from businesses who would like to fund local schools, community groups or charitable organisations. Through creating local community funding pots, administered through our Carbon Literacy Community Pot, we can foster a stronger connection between local businesses and individuals who may need financial support to become Carbon Literate – such as school children, or underrepresented groups in climate action.

Thank You!

We would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who generously donated to our fundraiser, shared our campaign, or followed along on social media. Campaigns such as the Green Match Fund allow us to raise vital funds and increase awareness, which continues to accelerate the growth of Carbon Literacy and our progress toward a zero-carbon world.

Now, we look forward to seeing what more we can achieve in 2025. With preparations for the fifth annual Carbon Literacy Action Day now underway and other initiatives in the pipeline, we are excited to see what further impact we can have – whether that be locally, regionally, nationally or internationally!

From everyone at The Carbon Literacy Project; thank you for your valued and continued support. During these uncertain economic times we depend on the support of our incredible community through initiatives like this, to keep up the momentum and continue to do the work we love. This is in line with our charitable mission: to spread Carbon Literacy to as many people as possible, and to foster a zero-carbon culture.
