On September 9th, we brought our Carbon Literacy trainer community together for our annual Trainer Celebration Evening, celebrating another year of trainers across the network sharing their knowledge and passion for climate action.

Hosted by Autotrader in their Skyline event space on the 14th floor of its Manchester office, the evening brought together certified Carbon Literacy Trainers (CLTs), Carbon Literacy Consultants (CLCs) and Carbon Literacy Training Organisations (CLTOs) to share experiences and celebrate their achievements in Carbon Literacy. With drinks and Caribbean-inspired vegan food from ARMR and stunning views across the city, it was a chance to recognise the growing community helping bring climate action into workplaces, sectors and communities across the UK and beyond.

Recognising our newest Carbon Literacy Consultants

A highlight of the evening was celebrating our three newest Carbon Literacy Consultants (CLCs): James Dove, Emma Burlow and Jamie Joyce.

CLC is the highest level of Carbon Literacy trainer certification. This invitation-only accreditation recognises trainers who have gone above and beyond in the volume, scope and quality of their training, as well as their advocacy for the Project. Each of our new CLCs has brought Carbon Literacy into their own field and developed an impressive body of work along the way.

• James Dove began delivering training in 2021 and has since created five courses and certified almost 500 individuals across sectors including music, sport, education, SMEs and local authorities.
• Jamie Joyce started delivering training in 2022 and has been instrumental in supporting Argyll Countryside Trust’s Gold CLO status and the development of the world’s first Carbon Literate primary school, alongside advocating for Carbon Literacy in rural communities and education.
• Emma Burlow has delivered Carbon Literacy training to more than 1,300 learners across 29 countries and trained more than 100 people through the Lighthouse Sustainability Train-the-Trainer course.

We’re delighted to welcome James, Emma and Jamie as brand new CLCs and recognise the expertise and commitment behind their momentous achievements.

Honouring our Carbon Literacy Training Organisations

We also celebrated the Carbon Literacy Training Organisations (CLTOs) that have made a significant contribution to the growth of Carbon Literacy through the quality, breadth and scale of their training.

• Autotrader is celebrating its fourth year as a CLTO, having first been accredited in 2022. They have funded and co-created the Automotive Sector Toolkit and Digital & Tech Sector Toolkit, with the Automotive Toolkit now having trained more than 346 organisations and 7,373 learners.
• Cynnal Cymru ,our key Carbon Literacy delivery partner in Wales, is celebrating six years as a CLTO. They have certified 2,024 individuals from more than 350 organisations and have played an important role in establishing Carbon Literacy training consortiums across Wales.
• Keep Scotland Beautiful is our longest-serving CLTO, having first been accredited in 2019 after beginning its Carbon Literacy journey in 2016. They have produced and accredited 55 Carbon Literacy courses and remain a key delivery partner in Scotland.
• Speak Carbon Collective, has also made a significant contribution to the Trainer Network since becoming a CLTO in 2024. They have been involved in creating and accrediting 35 Carbon Literacy courses and have two certified CLCs.
• Manchester Metropolitan University has contributed to the development of 15 Carbon Literacy courses, as well as making its resources freely available to many more. More than 160 institutions have access to its free Toolkits for Higher and Further Education.

A growing community of expertise

The achievements celebrated this year reflect the growing breadth of Carbon Literacy training and the expertise that trainers bring to their work.

Our trainers are delivering Carbon Literacy in a huge range of settings, from organisations and workplaces to communities and educational institutions. They bring their own professional knowledge and experience to the training, helping learners understand what climate action means in the context of their own work.

For many, becoming a trainer is an opportunity to develop their career, whether that means taking on new responsibilities within an existing role or developing a new path independently.

As the pool of Carbon Literacy training continues to grow, accreditation provides a way for trainers to demonstrate their experience and expertise. Our accredited CLFs, CLTs and CLCs are recognised for their ability to deliver high-quality Carbon Literacy training within their unique fields:

This year also saw the introduction of CLT certification renewals, helping us stay connected with and support some of the most active trainers in the network. It was really inspiring to read about the ongoing catalytic work of our renewing CLTs.

With Manchester being the birthplace of Carbon Literacy and now the UK’s second city (with No 10 North down the road), and Autotrader’s key position both in the city and in expanding Carbon Literacy, it was the perfect meeting point for our network of trainers. We were honoured to still see strong representation from Scotland and Wales – special thanks to those trainers who travelled from afar to meet peers in the community.
