At Ecosurety, we’ve seen first-hand how Carbon Literacy can transform the way organisations think, act, and lead on climate.
We’re data experts with a mission to enable the world’s leading brands to make smart and sustainable packaging decisions. Through our own Carbon Literacy journey, we’ve learned that meaningful change doesn’t stop at organisational boundaries. It grows through people and the networks and communities they influence.
That’s why we’re proud to announce our sponsorship of the Carbon Literacy for Community Leaders Toolkit. Having experienced a Carbon Literate transformation ourselves, we’re committed to helping community leaders unlock the same potential, beyond the workplace.
Our journey with Carbon Literacy began with a simple idea: give people the knowledge and confidence to act in reducing carbon emissions.
For me personally, that started through Ecosurety’s volunteering allowance. Back in 2022, I used my volunteering time to help The Carbon Literacy Project assess learner pledges, and I quickly realised its value. It was obvious that Carbon Literacy could strengthen our business, our supply chain, and the wider packaging sector. Our leadership team swiftly agreed, and our journey began!
Since then, Carbon Literacy has become embedded across Ecosurety. Today:
We’ve also celebrated key milestones along the way, including achieving Gold Carbon Literate Organisation (CLO) status, which recognised the depth, impact and consistency of action across our organisation.
Most importantly, Carbon Literacy has changed how we think. It’s made climate action part of everyday decision-making, not a separate initiative, but a shared responsibility across the whole team.
If Carbon Literacy can transform organisations, its potential at community level is equally significant.
Community leaders hold a unique position, whether informal or formal, as trustees, councillors or community group coordinators. They influence behaviours, shape local conversations, connect people and enable local action that spreads. It’s a powerful combination.
That’s exactly the thinking behind the Community Leaders Toolkit, developed by The Carbon Literacy Project. It’s designed to reach community groups, charities, and grassroots organisations that are often underserved, but critical to driving meaningful, local change.
What resonates with Ecosurety is that community leaders act as multipliers. By equipping them with the knowledge and tools to understand and act on climate change, we can unlock a ripple effect that extends far beyond the individual.
The Community Leaders Toolkit builds on this by offering:
On a personal level, this resonates deeply with me. My own Carbon Literacy journey inspired me to get involved in collaborative, local community action that includes a community market garden, planting new community orchards and leading a new community tree nursery. I know first-hand how these projects strengthen community and enable people to learn about – and act on – the climate and biodiversity crisis in a wonderfully positive way. It’s something I deeply cherish, and I can’t imagine not being involved in them.
Supporting Carbon Literacy for Community Leaders is about recognising and helping groups like these access the tools they need without additional barriers, whether they are already climate-focused or not at all. This matters because the transition to a low-carbon future won’t be delivered by institutions alone. It will happen in neighbourhoods, local groups, and everyday interactions. It will happen through trusted voices and shared effort.
As Will Ghali, Ecosurety CEO, puts it: “At Ecosurety, we’ve seen how Carbon Literacy can transform how people think and act. Community leaders are powerful multipliers and supporting Carbon Literacy at this level transforms knowledge into shared, local action, embedding climate awareness where it can have some of the biggest impact. We can all contribute to positive climate action, and there should not be a barrier to do so.”
Our sponsorship is about scale and momentum. We want to help Carbon Literacy for Community Leaders reach more people, more organisations, and more communities, amplifying the multiplier effect that makes this approach so powerful.
It also marks the next step in our own journey. As we continue to embed Carbon Literacy across our business and sector, this initiative will support our ambition to progress towards Platinum Carbon Literate Organisation status, going further in both participation and impact beyond our own organisation.
And if there’s one thing our Carbon Literacy journey has shown us, it’s this: when people have the knowledge, the tools, and the confidence to act, change happens faster.
